Gifts in Wills

Breakfast Challenge

When you leave a gift in your Will to Whitechapel Mission, you help ensure that we can continue to be here every day of the year for everybody who needs us.

It allows us to care for them for as long as it takes to find them the homes they truly belong in, where they are treated with love, care and respect. A gift in your Will helps ensure their future.

We will never stop caring

The Whitechapel Mission has been caring for the homeless and marginalised since 1876 – including a day centre, skills training and career advice, activity programmes and specialist support for complex needs. By encouraging each person to address the issues which caused their homelessness, we help them to gain the skills and confidence to make lasting changes in their lives.

We believe everyone deserves a chance, regardless of their background, race or religion. We are open to all, without exception.

Every day of the year, we welcome the weary faces of men and women facing despair. Many have tried surviving on the streets. Others are encountering homelessness for the first time after losing jobs or facing personal crises. Hundreds of people literally feel that they have nowhere else to turn for help. But through your gifts, you are here for them in their time of need. And we do this without public funding.

We know that we can, and are, making a positive and lasting difference to the people who ask for our help. For 150 years, Whitechapel Mission has been here for people sleeping rough in London, welcoming them in without question and caring for them without judgement. One in three of these people was cared for thanks to gifts in Wills.

A gift in your Will to Whitechapel Mission is an incredible way to celebrate your love of people and leave a lasting legacy for people in need of help by giving them the second chance of happiness they deserve. Gifts in Wills are vital to all areas of our work, so any gift you give, whatever size, will make a big difference to the people coming through our doors.

By remembering Whitechapel Mission in your Will, you’ll ensure that we can continue to be here every day, for everybody, and for as long as we’re needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Leaving a will can make a difficult time that much easier.

Finalising the affairs of someone who has passed away without a will causes delays and complications. During this time, your loved ones will be unable to access the money you intended for them, and legal costs could reduce the value of your estate. Making a will also enables you to leave a gift to other causes or charities such as the Whitechapel Mission.

The cost of a straightforward will is often less than £200. This is money well spent to ensure your wishes are followed and your loved ones are looked after.

You’ll also need to keep your will up to date as your circumstances and family can change over the years. Minor additions can be made using a document called a codicil, and this is also an easy way to leave a legacy gift to a charity.

Once you have calculated your estate, you can draw up a list of people you wish to benefit and in what way.

At this point, you may also consider leaving the Whitechapel Mission a share of the assets that are left over – your residuary estate. A residuary gift is by far the most effective way of remembering us in your will, as the value tends to adjust in line with inflation, meaning we receive the level of support you intended.
